FRANCIS BACON (1561 - 1626)


Sir Francis Bacon was an Elizabethan essayist, philosopher and statesman. He is regarded as the father of English Essay. Bacon was the son of Nicholas Bacon who was the lord keeper of the seal for Queen Elizabeth - I. Bacon entered the Trinity College at the age of 12, where he described his tutors as “Men of sharp wits, shut up in their cells of a few authors chiefly Aristotle,their dictator” , this very statement marked the beginning of Bacon’s rejection of Aristotelianism, Scholasticism and the New Renaissance Humanism.

He earned his reputation as a debater by entering the British parliament as a member in the house of commons in 1593. Bacon first published a small volume of essays in 1597.He has also been called as the creator of Empiricism. Bacon’s work established and popularized Inductive methodologies for scientific inquiry which was often called as the Baconian method.After Queen Elizabeth's demise and James I accession to the throne in 1603, Bacon was appointed as the Lord Chancellor in the court and became the first scientist to receive the knighthood. 

In 1621 Bacon was held against the charges of corruption and bribery and was imprisoned in the Tower of London.


Bacon devoted his last years in the Science and literature.He died in 1629 at the age of 65, after his death he remained to be influential through his works. Pope regarded Bacon as  - “Truly wisest, brightest and meanest of mankind”.
